자신이 모른다는 것을 아는 것이 지혜의 첫걸음이다. Knowing what you don’t know is the first step to wisdom.

“아는 것을 안다고 말하고, 모르는 것을 모른다고 말하는 것이 참 지혜이다.” 공자가 논어에서 한 말이다. “To say that you know what you know, and to say that you don’t know what you don’t know, that is true wisdom.” Confucius said in the Analects.

이렇게 지혜(智慧)란 남을 속임도 아니고, 남의 아픔을 정직히 표현하는 행위도 아닌, 자신이 살아남는 묘책이다. In this way, wisdom is not a trick to deceive others, or an act of honestly expressing others’ pain, but a clever way to survive.

다리 하나는 말의 반대편에 가려져 보이지 않았고, 총을 들고 목표물을 조준하니 자연스레 한 눈을 감고 있었으며 말을 타고 달리기에 몸을 자연히 앞으로 숙이게 되니 난장이도 정상인처럼 보이게 그렸던 것이다. One leg was hidden on the other side of the horse, and when he aimed his gun at the target, he naturally closed one eye, and

마지막으로 불려 온 화가는 왕(王)이 말을 타고 총을 겨누며 사냥 하는 모습을 그렸다가 일등공신이 되었다. The last painter called in painted the king hunting while riding a horse and aiming a gun, and was given the title of first-class contributor.

옛날, 외다리에 애꾸눈인 난장이 임금이 있었다. 임금은 화가(畵家)를 불러 자기 초상화를 그리게 했다. Once upon a time, there was a king who was one-legged and one-eyed. The king called in a painter to paint his portrait.
